Lawrence Hicks, age 84, of Claremont, NC, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at his residence. Born August 2, 1930, in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Clabe and Ollie Hicks. Lawrence was a member of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba, NC and had retired from Hawley Fuel Coal Co. in West Virginia. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and enjoyed telling stories about his days working in the mine. Lawrence Hicks, age 84, of Claremont, NC, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at his residence. Born August 2, 1930, in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Clabe and Ollie Hicks. Lawrence was a member of Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba, NC and had retired from Hawley Fuel Coal Co. in West Virginia. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and enjoyed telling stories about his days working in the mine. He especially loved spending time with his family and his church family and enjoyed watching old movies and episodes of Bonanza. Lawrence also enjoyed working in his yard and riding his mower.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers, Robert Hicks, Ray Hicks, George Hicks, and Darrell Hicks; sisters, Shirley H. Arrington and Jean H. Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Lois Riffe Hicks of the home; sons, Lawrence Edward "Buddy" Hicks, II, and wife Linda of Mooresville, NC, and Chris Hicks and wife Suzan of Conover, NC; daughters, Phyllis H. Ballengee and husband Jerry of Newton, NC, Dinah Kay H. Belcher and husband Dennis of Lancaster, SC, and Brenda H. Sparks and fiancé Troy Akers of Bluefield, WV; brother, Carl Hicks of Georgia; sisters, Caroline H. Johnson of TN, and Theresa H. Wise of Florida; grandchildren, Michael Hicks, Jennifer Hicks, Aaron Ballengee, Chris Ballengee, Gary Belcher, Denise Thomas, Stephanie Sparks, Brandon Sparks, Adam Hicks, and Phillip Hicks; great-grandchildren, Sara, Alex, Kaylee, Brendan, Bryson, Patrick, and Addison; numerous nieces and nephews.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, April 3, 2015, at Mathis Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Travis Triplett will officiate and the burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the church from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
