John Thomas "Tom" Smith, 63, ascended into heaven Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017.

Born in Catawba County, Jan. 8, 1954, he was the son of the late Dorothy Smith Hefner and stepfather Clyde Junius Hefner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Smith Crouse.

Those left to cherish his memory are daughter, Shannon Nicole Little of Hickory; sisters, Myrtle Smith Newton of Lincolnton, Elizabeth "Libby" Hefner Shook of Newton; grandchildren, Jackson Dean Little, Elyn Harper Little; nephews, Brian Hawkins, David Sigmon; nieces, Tammy Crouse Gantt, Tangy Crouse,...

Tom was a generous person. He did not like seeing people struggle and would do his best to help out those he loved when he could. The following poem stanza sums up Tom nicely "Your life was one of kindly deeds. A helping hand for others needs. Sincere and true in heart and mind. Beautiful memories left behind."

A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
